Baptism

In recent times many people do not understand the difference between a Baptism and Christening. Although many of the customs are the same there are key traditional differences between a Baptism and a Christening.  In a Baptism the person has made a conscious decision to follow the Christian Faith and commit to Christ, whereas in a Christening the parents have made the decision for the child to be adopted into their chosen faith. The differences between the terms Baptism and Christening are explained in more detail on the Home Page.

Baptisms are generally held for older children or adults who have a knowledge and understanding regarding the commitment they are about to make to Christ. Many of the same customs which are evident at a Christening are also displayed at a Baptism, such as the service being held in a church, godparents being appointed, the wearing of a baptismal robe and the bringing of gifts for the child. Family and friends also gather at the parents house or at a designated venue after the church service to engage in traditional celebrations and it is often customary to invite the vicar or celebrant to the afters.
