We know how busy you have been with your new baby. No doubt the weeks have just flown by and you can't believe the time has come around to organsing your baby christening. There are many different religions and therefore many different types of ceremonies. A Christening is essentially the child's first initiation into the religious faith and formally announces the name you have chosen them to carry.
Christening or Baptism?
Many people often wonder what the difference is between a Christening and a Baptism. These words are often used interchangeably even though there are traditional differences. Traditionally a Christening is a passive tradition. It is the parent's choice to raise their child in the Christian faith and not the child's. The baby is sprinkled with water by the priest or vicar over a small font and parents and godparents promise to raise their child in the Christian faith and set a good example. Parent's choose appropriate godparents who are strong in their chosen faith to help guide and nuture the child as they grow older. The term Christening therefore should mainly be used when referring to infant baptisms.
A Baptism on the other hand is usually performed when the child is older or an adult dedicates themselves to God. Baptisms, by some churches are often regarded as more active ceremonies. The decision being made to enter the Christian faith is being taken solely by the child or adult and not by the parents. Traditionally, the act of baptism involves being fully submerged in a pool of water, instead of just being sprinked with water. The term Baptism therefore should be mainly used when the person being baptised has made the decision themselves.
Whichever term you refer to, either a Christening or a Baptism both involve making a dedication to Christ.
Naming Day
A Naming Day ceremony is becoming a more popular choice of celebration for some parents for formally announcing the baby's name and welcoming them into the world. Parents who do not want to impose a religious belief on their child or who are of different religions may prefer their child decides their own religious faith when they are older. For parents who wish their child to undergo some form of blessing without religious connotations a naming day ceremony is ideal.
